Maples Crossing

Project Overview

The Maples Crossing Dome, located in Amesbury, MA, was established as a permanent air-supported structure over a full-size turf field to offer year-round athletic opportunities. With its prominent location visible from nearby highways, this dome is a cornerstone facility for athletes from Northern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. The project aims to foster athletic development, community engagement, and greater accessibility to high-quality sports amenities.

Goals and Challenges

The primary objectives. ofthe Maples Crossing Dome project were:

State-of-the-Art Facility

Providing an all-weather, accessible sports facility that could serve the region’s athletes year-round.

Enhanced Visibility and Accessibility

Increasing the visibility of Maples Crossing to draw more athletes and visitors, and to position it as a central hub for athletic training in the area.
Challenges included navigating complex municipal permitting processes, as air-supported structures are less familiar to local authorities. Additionally, the need for thorough footing design and utility planning required significant attention to detail, which necessitated coordination with engineering teams and local contractors.

Why Air-supported Structures and The Farley Group

Maples Crossing selected an air-supported structure for its flexibility, durability, and ability to accommodate various sports activities year-round. The inclusion of skylights allows natural light to illuminate the space, creating a bright and inviting environment even without artificial lighting. The Farley Group was chosen for their strong reputation for quality service and expertise in air-supported structures. With a proven track record of successfully completing similar projects, The Farley Group’s extensive experience and commitment to high-quality service made them the ideal partner for this ambitious initiative.

Planning and Installation Process

The planning phase involved bi-weekly meetings over a 3-4 month period with The Farley Group to ensure all functional and aesthetic requirements were met. Installation was meticulously managed by The Farley Group over two weeks, which included delivering and setting up electrical systems, generators, and the inflation of the dome.

Overcoming Challenges

The primary obstacles were:

Footing Design Coordination

While engineered designs were provided, additional coordination for utility placements and access considerations needed earlier attention. The process required input on conduit locations, access roads, and utility stubs for future expansions.

Engineering Support

Overseeing the project required securing expensive engineering support due to the novelty of air-supported structures in the region.

Project Outcomes

The Maples Crossing Dome not only achieved but exceeded its initial goals by enhancing the facility’s visibility and expanding athletic opportunities. Notable outcomes include:

Increased Visibility and Engagement

Its prominent highway location has spurred a surge of inquiries and bookings, particularly during the winter months.

Expanded Athletic Development

The dome supports a diverse range of sports, providing a versatile, weather-resistant space that facilitates year-round training and competitions.

Benefits and User Feedback

The community response to the Maples Crossing Dome has been overwhelmingly positive. Athletes and visitors alike have been impressed by the facility, particularly its convenience and functionality. The structure has already boosted community engagement and positioned Maples Crossing as a regional sports destination.

Future Plans and Benefits

Looking ahead, Maples Crossing anticipates that the dome will be a pivotal resource for athletic development. Plans are in place to expand programming, host larger tournaments, and offer community events that leverage the dome’s unique capabilities. The facility is expected to become a regional cornerstone for sports and athletic development.

The installation of the air-supported dome at Maples Crossing has been a game-changer for our facility and the surrounding community. This incredible resource allows athletes to train and compete year-round without weather interruptions. The visibility from the highway has sparked new interest, and we’re already seeing the positive impact of increased bookings, especially during the winter months. This structure has far exceeded our expectations in terms of both functionality and community engagement.”
